The Windmill Allotment Community is a well established group, a little united nations of many races, we all are brought together by the love of growing food. We help each other.

Mission Statement

This is a community resource that has been used for over 100 years. It embodies the history and amenity value of the local neighbourhood but has been run down under the current ownership. The community has decided to regenerate it.

We are a multinational group of local people who are bound together by our interest in growing food.

Our group has a large number of chronically sick, elderly and disabled members as well as able members and some with young children.

Our vision is to build a stronger community and draw in more people to:

  • share this wonderful resource with disadvantaged groups
  • reveal and expound the history of the site, and
  • the development of allotments practices
  • teach the history of tools
  • explore horticultural therapy
  • be open to the public on selected days
  • hold celebrations and link with educational courses

This programme will begin with working with two groups in the neighbourhood

Windmill Lodge for the elderly; 3 groups made up of the visually impaired, wheelchair users and able elderly.

UKC Coalition of People Living with HIV and Aids, a charity building a cross-community partnership to offer horticultural occupational therapy to local patients.

Our first open day will be on Sunday August 14th as part of the nationwide Allotments Open Week.

Future projects include:

  • Cultural Cuisine
  • Therapeutic Food
  • Work with schools and young people
  • Devolving Management
  • Creating and exhibition space
  • Creating a library.

Windmill Allotments is a unique project showing how a community can be cohesive across age and nationality barriers, Supporting this community with its programme of sharing and developing whilst at the same time protecting this precious site, underlines the core values in this Borough and will put quality back into the life of all who visit, cooperate and help us grow.
