Dear David Owens,
Elderly inter-generational allotment gardening befriending project: Plot 21 project
Dear Sir,
I am writing in support of the wonderful community project using plot 21 on Thames Water's allotments site in Lyham road. The project has been running successfully for 2 years and is greatly valued by the elderly from the nearby Windmill Lodge care home, the local primary school, and volunteers of all ages. I understand that the Regional Manager of the care home, Geraldine Finney has also written in support explaining the great enthusiasm the care home's residents have for the project, and the opportunities it provides them, not only to enjoy a beautiful large green open space but also to learn about gardening, enjoy the produce, and have the company and friendship from the carefully chosen volunteers. I also understand that the project has secured charitable funding to continue its excellent work.
It seems to me that such a project is invaluable, especially in an urban community and in times like these.
It encourages togetherness and mutual understanding within the community as well as sharing the natural environment, exercise, social activity and the skills of allotment gardening and food production.
Thames Water's corporate and social responsibility states that the company supports education, environment and healthy living including an elderly project It seems a fitting responsibility for Thames to do its utmost to support this project by granting the application for Plot 21.
I urge Thames Water to support the local community by supporting this project, established and managed by the Friends of windmill allotments in conjunction with the Care Home, and to formally approve the application lodged on 30/4/07 and refreshed 27/10/08, so that they can continue to flourish on Plot 21.
Yours sincerely,
